How to clean the cameras on your Volkswagen ID.7

Your ID.7 has a camera behind the windscreen for driver assist systems and a rear view camera on the tailgate. Depending on trim, there are also front and mirror-mounted cameras for Area View. A dirty lens gives a blurry or useless image right when you need it most.

Where are the cameras on the Volkswagen ID.7?

  1. Windscreen, outside in front of the camera
  2. Grille or front bumper optional
  3. Under the door mirrors optional
  4. Reversing camera

Camera equipment varies by trim and model year. Check your owner's manual.

Where dirt builds up

The rear camera gets dirty fastest, especially in rain or on a wet parking lot. It has its own washer jet, triggered from the touchscreen or by pulling the wiper stalk, but owners say the jet is too weak to make much difference.

A clean rear camera is needed for a sharp image when parking. On trims with Area View, the front and mirror cameras matter too, for the 360-degree surround view.

How to clean the cameras on your ID.7

  1. 1

    Tear open

Each wet wipe is separately packaged to remain damp for months when left in a vehicle.

  2. 2

    Wipe the lens

A wet wipe can be used to remove dirt, road grime (film) and finger prints. Use the minimum amount of pressure to clean your lenses.

  3. 3

    Bin it

Do NOT use an individual wipe twice. After you have cleaned one surface, you will need to dispose of the wet wipe as the dirt has been transferred into the wipe. If you reuse a wet wipe, it may scratch the coating on your lens.

Volkswagen ID.7 questions

Why is the rear camera image on my ID.7 blurry?

Usually it is dirt, water droplets or road salt on the lens. The built-in washer jet does not always do enough, so wiping it by hand now and then makes a real difference.

Does every ID.7 have Area View cameras?

No, that depends on the trim level. Only the camera behind the windscreen and the rear view camera are standard or near-standard.

Can a wipe fix haze on the inside of the windscreen?

It is not dirt on a camera. Cleaning the outside will NOT correct this issue. It appears to be a different issue than a dirty lens.
