How to clean the cameras on your Kia Sportage
Your Kia Sportage (NQ5) has a camera behind the windscreen for lane keeping and forward collision assist. Depending on trim, there are also cameras on the tailgate and under the door mirrors for the Surround View Monitor and Blind-Spot View Monitor. Dirt on any of these lenses can affect those functions.
Where are the cameras on the Kia Sportage?
- Windscreen, outside in front of the camera
- Grille or front bumper optional
- Under the door mirrors optional
- Reversing camera
Camera equipment varies by trim and model year. Check your owner's manual.
Where dirt builds up
The mirror cameras pick up road spray and winter salt, the tailgate camera gets exhaust haze and splashback. Kia doesn't mention a camera washer, only the windscreen has a heated washer nozzle. So you clean the cameras yourself.
Forward Collision Alert and Lane Keeping depend solely on a clear view from the windscreen mounted camera. If the windscreen camera is obstructed then neither FCA nor LKA functions properly. All other systems mentioned above utilize information provided by the exterior cameras.
How to clean the cameras on your Sportage
- 1
Tear open
Each wet wipe is separately packaged to remain damp for months when left in a vehicle.
- 2
Wipe the lens
A wet wipe can be used to remove dirt, road grime (film) and finger prints. Use the minimum amount of pressure to clean your lenses.
- 3
Bin it
Do NOT use an individual wipe twice. After you have cleaned one surface, you will need to dispose of the wet wipe as the dirt has been transferred into the wipe. If you reuse a wet wipe, it may scratch the coating on your lens.
Kia Sportage questions
Does every Kia Sportage have the same cameras?
No. The windscreen camera is standard, but the mirror cameras and reversing camera depend on the trim level.
Can a wipe fix haze on the inside of the windscreen?
No, that's condensation or dirt on the inside of the glass, not a camera issue. Ventilating the car or cleaning the glass from inside is what helps there.
Why does lane keeping sometimes cut out in the rain?
The windscreen camera looks through the same glass you do. Dirt, salt or a hazy windscreen limits its view, which affects FCA and the lane keeping function.
