How to clean the cameras on your Volvo XC40

Your Volvo XC40 has a camera/radar unit behind the windscreen for City Safety and a rear parking camera above the number plate. Depending on trim, there is also a front camera in the grille and mirror cameras for the 360 Surround View system. Dirt on these lenses directly affects what the car can see.

Where are the cameras on the Volvo XC40?

  1. Windscreen, outside in front of the camera
  2. Grille or front bumper optional
  3. Under the door mirrors optional
  4. Reversing camera

Camera equipment varies by trim and model year. Check your owner's manual.

Where dirt builds up

The windscreen area in front of the camera unit collects a lot of dirt, road spray and, in winter, salt and ice. Volvo itself advises cleaning the camera lenses regularly with lukewarm water and car shampoo. The XC40 has no built-in camera washer, that feature is limited to models like the XC90 and XC60.

A dirty, iced or snow-covered windscreen in front of the camera/radar unit can trigger a 'Windscreen sensor blocked' message, limiting City Safety and other driver support functions. Dirt on the front or mirror cameras also reduces visibility in the 360 Surround View.

How to clean the cameras on your XC40

  1. 1

    Tear open

Each wet wipe is separately packaged to remain damp for months when left in a vehicle.

  2. 2

    Wipe the lens

A wet wipe can be used to remove dirt, road grime (film) and finger prints. Use the minimum amount of pressure to clean your lenses.

  3. 3

    Bin it

Do NOT use an individual wipe twice. After you have cleaned one surface, you will need to dispose of the wet wipe as the dirt has been transferred into the wipe. If you reuse a wet wipe, it may scratch the coating on your lens.

Volvo XC40 questions

Why does my XC40 show a windscreen sensor blocked message?

This happens when the camera/radar unit behind the windscreen is dirty, iced or covered in snow. Clean the windscreen in that spot and the message usually clears.

Does the XC40 have a self-washing camera?

No. Volvo only offers that camera washer kit for models like the XC90 and XC60, not for the XC40.

Can a wipe fix foggy or hazy patches on the inside of the windscreen?

No, this appears to be condensation or another issue on the inside glass surface. A wipe only cleanses the outside glass surface the camera looks through
