How to clean the cameras on your Tesla Model Y

Your Tesla Model Y Juniper runs on cameras instead of ultrasonic sensors. The windshield cameras, front bumper camera, cameras in the front fenders, the b-pillar cameras and the rear camera all need to stay clean for Vision Park Assist to work properly. A dirty lens can quickly trigger a warning or limit the feature.

Where are the cameras on the Tesla Model Y?

  1. Windscreen, outside in front of the camera
  2. Grille or front bumper
  3. Side cameras in the front fenders
  4. B-pillars, left and right
  5. Reversing camera

Camera equipment varies by trim and model year. Check your owner's manual.

Where dirt builds up

The rear camera picks up a lot of road spray in wet and winter conditions, and the shield on the Juniper only helps partly. The b-pillar cameras can fog up on the inside. Only the front bumper camera has a sprayer, the others do not.

Vision Park Assist and other driver assistance features rely entirely on the cameras, since there are no ultrasonic sensors anymore. If a camera gets blocked by dirt, rain or mist, you get a warning and some features may be restricted.

How to clean the cameras on your Model Y

  1. 1

    Tear open

Each wet wipe is separately packaged to remain damp for months when left in a vehicle.

  2. 2

    Wipe the lens

A wet wipe can be used to remove dirt, road grime (film) and finger prints. Use the minimum amount of pressure to clean your lenses.

  3. 3

    Bin it

Do NOT use an individual wipe twice. After you have cleaned one surface, you will need to dispose of the wet wipe as the dirt has been transferred into the wipe. If you reuse a wet wipe, it may scratch the coating on your lens.

Tesla Model Y questions

Why does my Model Y show a camera blocked warning?

The cameras are the eyes of Vision Park Assist. Dirt, rain or mist on a lens can trigger this warning, especially on the rear camera and the b-pillars.

Does the rear camera on the Juniper have a sprayer?

No, only the front bumper camera has a sprayer nozzle. The Juniper rear camera has a small shield against spray, but it isn't sprayed clean.

Can a wipe fix a b-pillar camera that's fogged up inside?

A wipe cleans the outside of the lens. If the camera is fogged up on the inside, a wipe on the outside won't fix that, it's a different issue.
