How to clean the cameras on your Toyota bZ4X

Your Toyota bZ4X has a windscreen camera for Toyota Safety Sense and a rear camera above the licence plate. Higher trims add a front bumper camera and two mirror cameras for the Panoramic View Monitor, and the Dutch Executive trim gets a digital rear-view mirror with its own camera. Dirt or spray on any of these lenses blurs the image you rely on.

Where are the cameras on the Toyota bZ4X?

  1. Windscreen, outside in front of the camera
  2. Grille or front bumper optional
  3. Under the door mirrors optional
  4. Camera for the digital rear-view mirror optional
  5. Reversing camera

Camera equipment varies by trim and model year. Check your owner's manual.

Where dirt builds up

The bZ4X has a heated washer nozzle and headlamp washers, but nothing built in to clean the camera lenses themselves. Road spray, rain and winter salt land on the rear camera above the plate, the bumper camera low at the front, and the mirror cameras under the housings, so these need wiping by hand.

Toyota Safety Sense uses the windscreen camera, so a dirty lens can affect lane and safety functions. Advanced Park relies on the front, side and rear cameras where fitted, so a smudged lens can affect how well parking guidance and the 360 degree view work.

How to clean the cameras on your bZ4X

  1. 1

    Tear open

Each wet wipe is separately packaged to remain damp for months when left in a vehicle.

  2. 2

    Wipe the lens

A wet wipe can be used to remove dirt, road grime (film) and finger prints. Use the minimum amount of pressure to clean your lenses.

  3. 3

    Bin it

Do NOT use an individual wipe twice. After you have cleaned one surface, you will need to dispose of the wet wipe as the dirt has been transferred into the wipe. If you reuse a wet wipe, it may scratch the coating on your lens.

Toyota bZ4X questions

Does every Toyota bZ4X have the 360 degree camera system?

No. In the Netherlands it's standard on Dynamic and Executive but not on Active. In Germany it's standard on Teamplayer and Lounge but not on Comfort. All trims do get the windscreen and rear cameras.

Why does my camera image look blurry or dark?

Sometimes it's just dirt on the lens, which a wipe can fix. Toyota also issued recall 24SD-065 for cars built in 2023 where a badly welded camera case let water in and affected the front or rear image, which a wipe cannot repair.

My rear camera image freezes, will cleaning the lens help?

Not if it's the software fault covered by US recall 25V744, for 2023 to 2025 bZ4X models with the Panoramic View Monitor. A wipe only helps with dirt on the lens, not a frozen image caused by software.
