How to clean the cameras on your Polestar Polestar 2

Your Polestar 2 has a camera behind the windscreen that detects vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, plus a rear camera fitted above the registration plate. Depending on trim, it may also have a front camera in the grille and side cameras in the door mirrors for the 360 degree view. Dirt on these lenses directly affects what the car sees.

Where are the cameras on the Polestar Polestar 2?

  1. Windscreen, outside in front of the camera
  2. Grille or front bumper optional
  3. Under the door mirrors optional
  4. Reversing camera

Camera equipment varies by trim and model year. Check your owner's manual.

Where dirt builds up

While rain, snow and road spray typically collect on the windshield in front of the camera lens and on the rear camera mounting above the license plate, the owners manual identifies both locations. Unfortunately, neither location has any type of self-cleaning mechanism.

Pilot Assist and collision avoidance rely on the windscreen camera. If it gets blocked by rain, snow or road spray, the manual says the system may not work. Dirt between the glass and the camera housing cannot be fixed with a wipe, that needs a service visit.

How to clean the cameras on your Polestar 2

  1. 1

    Tear open

Each wet wipe is separately packaged to remain damp for months when left in a vehicle.

  2. 2

    Wipe the lens

A wet wipe can be used to remove dirt, road grime (film) and finger prints. Use the minimum amount of pressure to clean your lenses.

  3. 3

    Bin it

Do NOT use an individual wipe twice. After you have cleaned one surface, you will need to dispose of the wet wipe as the dirt has been transferred into the wipe. If you reuse a wet wipe, it may scratch the coating on your lens.

Polestar Polestar 2 questions

Which cameras does the Polestar 2 have as standard?

As standard, the Polestar 2 has a camera mounted behind the windscreen and a rear camera positioned above the registration plate. The front camera and the two mirror cameras are included as an option within the 360-degree camera package.

Why does Pilot Assist sometimes stop working in rain?

The windscreen camera can get blocked by heavy rain, snow or road spray. The manual notes the unit may not work properly then, so keep the glass in front of the camera clean and dry.

Can a wipe fix fogging on the inside of the windscreen?

A wipe will only remove dirt etc. from the outside of the camera unit; condensation/haze on the inner surface of the glass or problems with the software, require another solution.
